No More Panhandling In Russett

July 2, 2009

Ann Arundel County has made it illegal to panhandle at intersections.   This will be a welcome relief to all of us who shop at Sam’s Club in Laurel Maryland.  Every time I am at the intersection of 198 and East Russett, I have to deal with panhandlers.

These pandhandlers are not only annoying but dangerous to those of us in Laurel Md.   Traffic gets distracted at the sight of these people in the middle of an intersection.  Someone, including a panhandler, could get seriously injured.

As a realtor, I can tell you this kind of activity can have a negative impact on Laurel real estate.

However, thanks to Maryland Del. Joseline Pena-Melnyk and Maryland Del. Pamela Biddle, this eyesore and safety issue has been eliminated.  Their hard work push this bill through in Ann Arundel County.

Laurel Maryland today is a better community now that this new law is in place.

  1. Several homeowners from Russett, Harmon Woods and Maryland City all went to Annapolis to testify in favor of the bill.
I personally went no less than 5 times to Annapolis to successfully testify in support of the bill at both the subcommittee, house and senate levels.
The combined efforts of the residents helped to push this bill up the priority list. It was a good bill that had support is several areas and Joselyne P Melnyk really helped to push it through all the way to the finish line.

  2. Tim,
Thanks for your efforts. For the most part, I find people at intersections annoying. I am also concerned for their saftey. I would not want my kid to be hanging out in the middle of traffic. It seemed that spot right before you turn into Russett in Laurel, was a consistent problem. Great jog.
