The other day I got an email form Karen Lubieniecki. Karen is the President of the Laurel Historical Society. She was searching the internet for blogs on Laurel Maryland and came across mine. Needless to say she was impressed.
Karen also apprised me of the Laurel Museum located at 817 Main Street in Laurel. The museum is located right next to the Laurel pool. Currently, the Laurel Museum has an exhibit titled Shake, Rattle-n-roll about Laurel Maryland in the 1950s. About this time a large influx of federal workers swelled Laurel’s growth. Just like BRAC today.
The Laurel Museum has lots of fun activities for both adults and children. You can get more information at Laurel MD history.

Today we will look at the aborption rate for Laurel real estate in Prince Georges County.
In the past I have used the term absorption rate to indicate how many homes are selling in the first thirty days on the market in a given area. I am going to do something a little different today that will give a different perspective on the current market.
In Laurel Maryland 20707 currently there are 107 active listings on the market. In addition, there are 29 homes marked under contract. These two number combined equal 136. Last month, twelve homes sold.
Ok, so if we average 12 homes a month selling, then at the end of the year we have sold 144 homes in zip code 20707. We divide 144 homes sold by 52 weeks in the year and we get 2.77 homes selling per week We divide the 2.77 into our inventory of 136 and we come up with about 49 weeks to sell off all the inventory. That would give us about 11 months worth of inventory in Laurel 20707.
In Laurel Maryland 20708 the numbers are slightly different. You have an inventory of 72 homes either active or under contract. Eight homes sold last month. If we apply the same formula as above, we discover we need about 39 weeks to sell off the inventory.
So in Laurel 20707 we have about 11 months of inventory and in Laurel 20708 we have about nine months of inventory. These numbers would be altered if the number of homes sold increases or decreases.
This new method of figuring out the absorption rate, may be more accurate than the previous method. These numbers clearly indicate a buyer’s market in both 20707 and 20708.

Last night my wife and I were in the mood for some seafood in Laurel Maryland. Laurel has a couple of seafood restaurants. Unfortunately, the Chesapeke Bay and Surf is no longer around. We decided to give Bottom of the Bay Seafood a try. In the past, we have bought crabs to go and been pleased with the food.
The Bottom of the Bay Seafood is located at 9590 North Laurel Rd in Laurel Maryland. Bottom of the Bay Seafood is a very casual place. It has bar and a restaurant. People wore tank-tops and shorts. Very, very casual.
We were seated next to the men’s bathroom. During our meal, my wife watched a parade of men going in and out of the men’s room. She discovered that many of the men would forget to lock the door. Several times someone opened the door and quickly said, “excuse me” and shut the door quickly. Late in our meal, one of the emoployees left two full trash cans right behind me.
We ordered a crab cream soup and a crab cake platter. The soup was cold and we sent it back. The one bright spot was the crab cakes. They were good and quite large. In fact, my wife and I split the platter which comes with two crab cakes. No shells in the cakes.
My wife and I decided we might order crabs to go in the future, but we will never eat there again.

All six elementary schools in Laurel Maryland Prince Georges County, completed the MSAs this week. As most parents know, the MSAs measure the progress of the schools student body. The MSAs give the state a chance to see what percentage of students are proficient enough in basic skills.
After reading the Laurel Leader and the Laurel Gazette, I got the impression that any level above 80% proficiency is good for a school. The paper also quoted Bond Mill Elementary Principal, Justin Fitzgerald, as hopeing for a “90% to 95%” proficiency rating. That would be impressive.
Unfortunately for the students, this has also been the week they needed to complete their Science Fair projects. Whew! Glad I am not in elementary school anymore.

The Laurel Maryland residents who live in Montgomery County are still in a transition housing market. A transition housing market is not a buyer’s market or a sellers market.
A transition market is a balanced market.
With all the talk about the bad housing market, Montgomery County Maryland continues to lead the way to recovery.
Howard County Maryland is still a buyer’s market with only 19% of homes selling in the first thiry days. Prince Georges County is right behind with 18% of homes selling in the first thirty days. Ann Arundel county continues to be the weakest market for sellers with only 15% of homes selling in the first thirty days.

Its’ Spring time in Laurel Maryland and that usually means it is time for yard work. I notice around my neighborhood in West Laurel people begining to spruce up the yards for Spring and Summer. Lawns are being cut and flowers are being planted.
Many people make visits to nurserys looking for some great plants to put in their yards. A popular place for Laurel Maryland residents to visit is Fehr’s Nursery and Garden Center.
Fehr’s Nursery and Garden Center located at 4340 Sandy Spring Road in Burtonsville MD is just a stones throw from Laurel Maryland. My wife and I were there yesterday looking at some lettuce we plan to buy for our garden Walter Fehr and his son Brian were there for a friendly chat and advice what to buy and when to buy it.
Fehr’s Nursery and Garden Center has been doing business since 1939. It is probably a good idea to stop by and get some good ideas about your yard this Spring.

About three months ago my wife asked me to start growing a beard. She just wanted to see what I would look like with a beard. Well after about three weeks I had a very healthy looking growth on my face. However, though it looked nice, it needed to be trimmed and groomed.
So off we went to Laurel Center Mall on Route One to Bart’s Barber Shop. Bart’s Barber Shop is “old school”. It has the little barber poll on the door that swirls around. You walk in and notice all the barber chairs to the left and customer seats to the right. As soon as you walk-in, a barber in a white coat assist you to their chair. Once in the chair the grooming and hair cut can begin.
Don’t forget that I said, “walk-in”. No appointment necessary.
I told the nice young lady I wanted a beard trim, and she needed to ask my wife for the details. My wife explained how she wanted my beard to look and the process began. Fist the electric clippers. Then I tilted my head back and was treated to some hot shaving cream on my face. Then I felt the sharp blade of the barber’s straight edge giving me a close shave.
I don’t care what kind of razor you have, nothing gets my face as smooth as a stright edge razor. I can’t get over how smooth my face feels when I am done.
At Bart’s Barber shop in Laurel Maryland, you can get a shave, a trim and a haircut for a very reasonable price. In fact, you can find me at Bart’s Barber Shop at least once a week now.

For all of us in Laurel Maryland who are Maryland Terripan fans today is a big day. Today at 2:55 PM the University of Maryland’s mens basketball team tips off against the University of California. Maryland is a ten seed and California is a seven seed.
If Maryland gets past California, they will probably play the number two seed in the region Memphis. With a win against Memphis, Maryland would most likely play number one seed UConn.
Well dispite what the Washington Post said, Gary Williams and the Terripans made the NCAAs. Gary Williams is a good coach. His team is not as talented as others, but they got the job done.
Good luck today Maryland, all of us in Laurel Maryland will be watching.

Laurel Maryland is trying to improve its’ election procedures.
According to the local papers, the last election in Laurel Maryland had a very low voter turnout. A proposal has been put forth that would increase the number of wards from two to four. Each ward would elect its own representative. It is hoped decreasing the amount of area one delegate would have to cover would increase greater participation in the political process.
I am all for adding additional wards. I think the less ground an elected official has to cover, the better they can do their job. Just like smaller class sizes make it better for students and teachers smaller ward sizes make it better for the population being served.
Another proposal put before the coucil is early voteing. I am a strong believer in early voting. I believe it will increase participation. It just seems likely, the more opportunities to vote, the more people can vote. Early voting is hardly a new idea. Several states currently allow early voting. Laurel Maryland would benefit with these two changes alone.
