One of the many things I love about owning Laurel MD real estate is the community. Laurel Maryland works hard at keeping the community safe and wonderful place to live.
An example of this is the effort to keep the owners of Sweet Moon Grille, in South Laurel from obtaining a liquor license. Have you read about this in the paper?
The owners of this place have had lots of problems with crime at their previous locations. These are the same people who wanted to open a strip bar in Laurel. The commercial businesses these people have owned have been the site of murders and other criminal activity.
The Laurel community stepped up and prevented them from openning a strip bar and now the residents have succeeded again. Laurel Maryland residents have prevented the owners of the Sweet Moon Grille from obtaining a liquor license. The owners folded to pressure from the community and withdrew their application for a liquor license.
Congratulations to local councilman Tom Dernoga and others for keeping Laurel Maryland safe and a great place to live.

What the heck is going on with slots in Laurel Maryland?
There are people who have been pushing for slots in Laurel for years. The idea of slots apparently is that it will revive the horse raceing industry and provide much needed income for teachers and police. In fact, many teachers and police are for the slots.
The fact that teachers and police are for slots is a little shocking to me. However, it does highlight the fact that our schools and police need more money.
The latest news on slots is rather shocking as well. After all this push to get slots, two of the companies bidding on the slots failed to have their bids accepted. One of the companies, Magna, had its bid disqualified because it failed to pay the over 28 million dollar license fee.
How the heck do you plan to run a clean, safe and most importantly profitable gambling business, when you can’t even bid on it properly?
Well guess where this battle is going now? Thats right, the courts.
Stay tuned.

How will the new tax credit affect people who want to buy Laurel Maryland real estate? Is the tax credit good for any first time home buyer of any Maryland real estate?
The answer to the second question is “yes”.
Two quick points. First time home buyers of Maryland real estate, if they meet certain qualifications, will receive a tax credit of up to $8000 when they purchase a home between January 2009 and December 2009.
This means if at the end of the year, you owe $3000 to the IRS, you would receive a refund of $5000! And you do not have to pay it back. I believe you must stay in the home for at least three years.

If you are interested in buying Laurel real estate, read on.
A program is developing in Prince Georges County Maryland that will make buying a foreclosure very easy. The Feds are willing to give a buyer of a Prince Georges County Maryland foreclosure up to seven percent of the prurchase price for a down payment. Thats right! A buyer of a foreclosure in Prince Georges County could be given up to seven percent to use as a down payment on a foreclosure.
Don’t forget, after the government gives you the seven percent, and at the end of the year they give you another $8000 in a tax credit. You are almost getting paid to buy the property!
The government is throwing money at Prince Georges County foreclosure buyers. The program is set to go into effect March first.

District 1 Walk-in Zoning Enforcement Office is NOW Open!
The District 1 Satellite Office for Zoning Enforcement is now open. An
inspector will be on duty at the Satellite Office each day between
10am-2pm (Monday to Friday) to accept complaints and assist citizens of
District 1 in resolving their property maintenance problems. The
office is under the supervision of Matthew Thomas, Programs Manager. He
is assisted by Donald Green, an Inspector’s Supervisor just posted
to District Team 1.
Zoning enforcement is always a major issue, and it has been a goal to
get this office open so that citizens have easy access to inspectors to
talk about community concerns. It will also make it easier for the
inspectors to investigate complaints since they will be right in the
middle of the community.
As always, it is a good practice to inform my office of your concerns,
too, so that we may lend assistance. Contact my Constituent Services
Aide, Alex Hirtle: (301) 952-5349 or email AJHirtle@co.pg.md.us.
My Thanks to Tom Dernoga for supplying the above information.

If you own Laurel real estate you are probably familier with the Laurel Meat Market on Main Street. You can’t miss it if you drive down Main Street in Laurel Maryland. Just stop wherever you see the life size plastic cow on the sidewalk.
The Laurel Meat Market is not a new high tech store. It dosn’t have the latest equipment. It probably looks just like it did thirty years ago. The store has some general groceries along with some produce, but the best part of the Laurel Meat Market is in the back of the store.
The back of the Laurel Meat Market contains numerous glass cases full of all kinds of meat, pork, chicken and fish. The containers have big slabs of meat waiting to be cut up and given to hungry customers. Prices are great, the meat is good. I have been a customer of the Laurel Meat Market for over 15 years.
If you don’t feel like cooking the great meats, you can have the Laurel Meat Market cater your events and serve the food they have right from the store.
The Laurel Meat Market is another great reason to purchase Laurel Maryland real estate.

Now there is even more reason to buy Laurel real estate. The new stimulus package contains an $8000 tax credit for first time home buyers. This credit is in effect for first time buyers of homes from January of 2009 to December of 2009. The $8000 tax credit is less than what the senate approved earlier.
Unlike the original tax credit of $7500, the new $8000 tax credit does not have to be paid back. This gives first time home buyers more flexability. For example, a first time home buyer might be more willing to borrow money from a friend or relative for the downpayment, because they can use the tax credit to pay them back.
It is a great time to buy Maryland real estate. For more information on Maryland visit, Maryland homes.

Laurel Maryland real estate continues to do better than most parts of the country. Zip code 20707 in Prince Georges County Maryland has an absorption rate of 19%. Nineteen percent of homes in this Laurel Maryland zip code are selling in the first thirty days. This still puts the Laurel zip code in a buyers market, however, it is not as bad as other parts of the country.
Laurel Maryland zip code 20708, continues to be in a transition market, with 27% of the homes selling in the first thirty days. In this market this is a suprising statistic. For at least two weeks zip code 20708 continues to outperform the market.

Yesterday, I attended the Bond Mill Elementary School Honor Roll assembly. Bond Mill Elementary is located in West Laurel Maryland.
If you remember from a previous post, there are many examples of great academic achievment of students in the Laurel area.
The ceremony had several parts to it. First, Principal Justin Fitzgerald handed out the cetificates who made honor roll for social skill and behavior. Following this, students who achieved at least and A or B on their report card in every class were honored. And finally, all straight A students were honored.
After all the Academic awards were handed out, Pricipal Fitzgerald praised the students for their outstanding attendance. Bond Mill Elementary students attained over a 96% attendance rating.
Lastly, the coveted Golden Shoe Award, was given out to the class with the most students who walk to school.

The following are the absorption rates for the four Maryland counties that Laurel real estate is located. The Maryland counties are Montgomery, Prince Georges, Howard and Ann Arundel.
Montgomery County Maryland continues to lead the way out of a weak market with 22% of homes selling in the first 30 days. This is an increase of one percent. Over 56 homes went under contract in Montgomery County in the last week.
Prince Georges and Howard Counties in Maryland followed with 15% percent of their inventory selling in the first thirty days. Prince Georges County had 30 homes go under contract this week.
And finally, Ann Arundel County continues to be the weakest market at a 13% absorption rate. However, this is an increase of one percent for Ann Arundel County.
