School Boundaries In Laurel Md

March 28, 2008

In an effort to decrease over crowding in Laurel Md elementary schools, the Prince Georges County Board of Education will be holding a public hearing.  This hearing is not the first on this subject.  Earlier in March there was a hearing where parents voiced their concerns.  As a result of the hearing, the Board has now come up with a new proposal.  This new proposal will be debated with another plan

Basically, there is an option ‘B’ and an  option ‘Z’.  Part of Option B will allow fifth graders to finish elementary school at their current school.  If Option Z is implemented, fifth graders in three different elementary schools will attend Martin Luther King Middle School for the sixth grade.

There will be a hearing on April 7th at Beltsville Elementary School located at 4300 Wicomico Ave.  The time for the hearing is 7 pm.  Officials do want you to register at 240-264-1700 by 4 pm on April 7th.

Grandparents Day In Laurel A Great Tradition

March 24, 2008

This past week my daughters school, Bond Mill Elementary in Laurel Md had its traditional Grandparents Day.   Since 1981 it has been a tradition to have the grandparents and sometimes other relatives visit their grandchildren at Bond Mill Elementary school.  The grandparents share what it was like to be in elementary school back in their time.  The grandmothers and grandfathers also help the students in their assignments.  This event is always well attended and enjoyed very much by the students, teachers and grandparents.

Laurel Md High School Great College Aid

March 16, 2008

One of my daughters was going to Laurel High School in Laurel Md.  back in the late 1990s.  At that time Laurel High School had the best financial aid department for students going on to two or four year colleges.   At that time, Laurel High School assisted students in obtaining millions of dollars in financial aid.  This included loans, grants and scholoarships.  The staff at Laurel High School were dedicated to helping students succeed in life.

Hopefully this tradition has continued at Laurel.  Any parent thinking of buying some Maryland real estate, should consider the schools availability to help pay for a college education.  Laurel Md High School has demonstrated a strong committment to help their graduates obtain a college degree.

My Little Town

March 13, 2008

As I was walking my littel girl to Bond Mill Elementary school in Laurel Md this morning, I waived to a woman on the other side of the street.  This woman’s name is ‘Kim’.  We exchanged waves and a smile.  I had recently met Kim at Bond Mill Elementary event.  Both our children were in the drama departments most recent production.

As I waved to Kim, it made me think about all the people I have met since I moved to Laurel Md from Gaithersburg Md about 15 years ago.  I grew up in Montgomery County Md.  Those of us in Montgomery County had a bad impression of Laurel Md.  However, since moving to Laurel I realized those bad impressions were wrong.

In the last 15 years Laurel has grown on me.  Laurel Md is a great place to live.  I feel like I am a member of this town.  I know many of the people in my neighborhood.   Its nice to wave to familier faces.  All of these nice people know my daughter and I know their children.

My little town, Laurel Md, really feels like home.

Good And Quick Food In Laurel Md

March 12, 2008

Some long time Laurel Md residents will remember the Little Tavern located at 115 Washington Blvd in Laurel.  The Little Tavern used to serve up hamburgers by the bag and was open 24 hours.  A couple of years back the Little Tavern in Laurel Md closed its doors.  The familier green roofed building sat empty for  a time.

Well now, the building is open again.  Laurel Tavern Donuts now occupies the space.  Now you can still buy your burgers by the bag, and you can buy fresh donuts as well.   The food is better than the original Little Tavern.  The place has quickly gained popularity among the locals.  If you stop in to the Laurel Tavern Donuts in Laurel Md, you will become a regular too.

Since this blog post was originally published, Laurel Tavern Donuts have increased their hours and are now open seven days a week.  In addition, you can now by burgers by the bag again.
